Cool-Season Vegetables

In November, you have numerous choices for planting vegetables from both seeds and transplants here in zone 9. Lettuce varieties, in particular, are a personal favorite because they continue producing with each harvest, so you can enjoy fresh salads with your nightly dinner!

November garden herbs

Herbs

While the herb options may be slightly limited in this month, there are still plenty of choices. You can start herbs from seed, use transplants, or even take cuttings. If you decide to propagate cuttings in water, make sure to plant them in soil that contains a good amount of perlite and peat moss. These additions to your garden soil will create a nurturing environment for your water-rooted cuttings, encouraging them to grow into happy and mature plants!

Flowers

The list of low desert flowers that can be planted from seed or transplant in November is extensive. Whether you prefer vibrant blooms or delicate petals, you’ll find a wide range of options to add beauty to your garden.

November Garden Maintenance

Don’t forget to keep an eye out for weeds! Late November is the ideal time to treat weeds with pre-emergence herbicides. These chemicals are applied to bare ground to prevent weed growth later on. If you have gravel areas where you don’t plan to cultivate spring wildflowers, using herbicides can be especially beneficial as they can prevent the establishment of all seedlings. If you choose to apply the herbicide yourself, look for a ready-to-use product that is easy to handle. However, if you’re unsure about following the product label instructions precisely, it’s best to hire a professional to handle the task.
