Individual Coaching
Coaching will include a deep dive into your existing garden & cover topics like:
Sun
exposure
Choose an area with plenty of morning sunlight and some afternoon shade. Most vegetables, especially fruiting types, do best with six to eight hours of full sun exposure. Leafy and root vegetables will tolerate partial shade. Herbs can also tolerate 4 – 6 hours of sunlight. During our hot Phoenix summers you may need to use some sun shade cloth.
Seasonal
Plant Plans
In Phoenix, Arizona and the surrounding areas we have three growing seasons: cool, warm, and monsoon. Most vegetables are annuals, although there are some that are perennials. If protected, they can grow year-round. Planting at the right time for each type of plant is critical. Depending on when you begin your garden, we’ll design a plant plan with directions for transplants or starting from seed.
Water &
Irrigation
Next to sun, water and the availability of it is the most important thing to your plants. Whether you use
an existing irrigation sprinkler system, a garden grid, or something as simple as a clock attached to your
hose bib, timimg and amounts make all the difference in your success. In addition, being able to to adjust water for our
Arizona weather will be critical to your success.
Pest
Management
Different types of plants will attract different common pests. We’ll put together
a list of the usual suspects and how to treat them. I always suggest using trap plants like nasturtium, marigold, and alyssum, as they attract many garden pests and help to keep them away. Companion planting is
another useful technique for plant protection.
Soil &
Plant Nutrition
The soil is the food that nourishes your plants. Instead of fertilizing plants, think about nourishing the soil
as a way to feed the plants. Having a good combination of mediums like organic compost, coco coir, vermiculite, and quality soil will create a great planting medium. And by adding some
nutrition each growing season with organic compost, you will continue to see success in your garden.
