Soil and water – In the low desert, successful summer gardening depends on both. Healthy soil and smart watering are two of the most important elements for keeping your garden thriving through the heat. Below you’ll find simple tips for improving soil, managing moisture, and setting your plants up for success all season long.
Soil Strategies: It’s All About the Right Mix
Healthy soil is the foundation of every successful garden. In the low desert, it takes time to build up great soil – it’s very different from the hard-packed dirt you’ll find in most yards. But good soil pays off with healthier plants, better yields, and easier maintenance year after year. For raised beds, use an organic raised bed mix. I love the one from Arizona Worm Farm, but you can also create your own:
- 2 parts peat moss or coco coir
- 1 part vermiculite
- 3 parts compost
Top with 3 inches of mulch once your seedlings emerge. Each season, add 2 inches of fresh soil or compost to maintain healthy beds.
Test and Amend
Every few seasons, test your soil using a kit from the Maricopa County Extension. It will help identify nutrient deficiencies and guide your amendments.
Mulch and Water Wisely
Mulch is essential for moisture retention—especially during Phoenix summers. It keeps soil cool and reduces water evaporation.
PKG Tip: Water early in the morning for best absorption. Deep watering encourages strong roots. A moisture meter (inexpensive on Amazon) takes the guesswork out. And remember—always water the roots, not the foliage, to help prevent disease.
Water Strategies: Smart Watering Tips
If you hand water, consistency is key. It works great for disciplined gardeners, but for many (like me), an irrigation system is a lifesaver. A missed day in the Phoenix heat can mean lost plants.
Drip Irrigation – The Ideal Choice!
- Use a pressure valve, timer, and emitters placed at the base of each plant.
- Delivers slow, deep watering right to the roots.
- Flexible and customizable – add, remove, or adjust emitters as your garden grows.
Avoid sprinklers (lots of evaporation) and soaker hoses (less precise, can overwater).
Pro Tip: During extreme heat waves, you may need to supplement your regular watering. Keep a close eye on your plants and adjust as needed.
Soil and Water are a Winning Team!
With just a little planning and attention to soil and water, your summer garden can thrive—even in the Phoenix heat. Remember, healthy roots grow happy plants, and the right watering habits can make all the difference. Stay consistent, stay cool, and enjoy every bit of your garden’s growth this season!
