Amaryllis Care | Where to Begin

When your Amaryllis flowers fade, it’s best practice to cut them off to prevent seed formation. While there might be a temptation to cultivate the seeds, it’s important to note that this process can be quite lengthy. It takes anywhere from three to 14 years for a seed-sprouted amaryllis to flower! I prefer to focus on the care and maintenance of the existing plant rather than embarking on the time-consuming task of seed cultivation.

Wait until the flower stalk starts to yellow before removing it. Both the flower stalk and leaves play a vital role in promoting photosynthesis. You can go ahead and remove the stalk when it turns yellow, but make sure to leave the leaves intact as they are crucial for generating energy and nourishment, enabling the plants to bloom again.

Next Steps in Amaryllis Care

After your Amaryllis is done blooming and the flowers have been removed, place it in a bright indoor location (a window with southern exposure is a great place). Make sure to water regularly and fertilize monthly with an all-purpose houseplant or indoor plant fertilizer, following the directions on the label.

How do I get my Amaryllis to rebloom?

For Amaryllis to rebloom, they need to be exposed to cool temperatures for a period of 8 to 12 weeks. By placing your Amaryllis in a cool (45 to 55°F), dark location, it will force them into dormancy. During this time, watering isn’t necessary. Once the leaves become yellow, they can be removed.

While in this resting period, periodically inspect the bulbs. If they begin to grow, place them in a sunny window. If they don’t start to grow on their own, you can force new growth by watering the soil thoroughly and putting them back into a warmer, sunny location. By following these steps, beautiful flowers will usually develop about 4-6 weeks after the dormant period.

When it comes to Amaryllis care, it’s essential to provide the right conditions to ensure its growth and blooming potential. From storing the dormant bulb in a cool, dark place to placing it in a sunny spot with well-draining soil, each step contributes to the overall well-being of the plant. Additionally, maintaining consistent watering, providing bright indirect light, and pruning leaves at the right times are crucial. By following these guidelines, you can nurture your amaryllis and look forward to beautiful blooms year after year.
